The rapper known as 50 Cent was born Curtis James Jackson III. He is also an actor and has been doing well in both roles. His first album, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was very impressive and made him a household name in 2003. He was born July 6, 1975.
He was born in a part of New York known as Queens in poverty. When he was only 12 years old, he began running drugs in order to help buy food for his family. His mother was a cocaine addict and she died when he was 8. He had to live with his grandparents and several other family members. By the time he was 11, he was bringing both drugs and guns to school with him for money.
He also took up boxing as a means to help him defend himself. When he was 16, he got caught with drugs and guns at school. He was sent to a correctional boot camp for teens for 3 months. This is where he got his nickname 50 Cent. It is a metaphor for change in his world.
In 2000, he was no longer in that scene. Yet he was shot 9 times and it was a long road to recovery. He was discovered in 2002 by fellow rapper, Eminem. This is how he got his record deal with Interscope Records. The dimple on one check is really a bullet scar.
In 2005, 50 Cent wrote a book about his early life and culture and his forced world into drug selling. He also reflects on becoming a rapper and how he can give back to society in a better way in such a role. He published a second book in 2009. He states he has never had a typical job, but has plenty of respect for those that do.
In 2007, 50 Cent had a son with his girlfriend, Shaniqua Tompkins. He has always worked to have a relationship with him that he never got to have with his own father. About 40% of his gross album sales are from that first album released in 1994.
He has been involved in a variety of altercations and lawsuits over the years. The mother of his son has tried to sue him a few times due to feeling she should get money from him for her basic living needs. He has also been involved in fights with fans at concerts and even a few security guards in hotels.
